What is Thymalin 10mg?

Thymalin is a standardised preparation of low-molecular-weight polypeptides originally isolated from thymus tissue. It was developed in the 1970s and 1980s by Vladimir Khavinson and colleagues in St Petersburg as the first of the tissue-derived peptide bioregulators, and it is the thymic counterpart of pineal-derived epithalamin. Unlike a synthetic single-sequence peptide, Thymalin is defined by a reproducible peptide profile rather than one molecular formula.

Thymalin is studied because the thymus is the organ that educates T lymphocytes, and thymic peptides are reported in animal and cell research to influence T-cell differentiation, the balance of CD4 and CD8 subsets and cytokine signalling. It has a long history in Russian immunology literature and in Khavinson’s gerontology work on age-related immune decline.

GenoPept supplies Thymalin in the UK as a lyophilised research preparation in a 10mg vial, each batch verified at ≥99% purity with a Certificate of Analysis, strictly for in-vitro laboratory research. Our guide to Khavinson peptide bioregulators gives the wider context.

Thymalin 10mg research applications

Thymalin research sits mainly in immunology and gerontology. The areas below reflect published cell-culture, animal and older clinical literature on thymic peptides and do not describe use in people.

T-lymphocyte differentiation

Cell-culture and animal models are used to study how thymic polypeptides influence thymocyte maturation, expression of T-cell surface markers and the CD4/CD8 ratio.

Immunosenescence and ageing

Khavinson’s research programme investigated Thymalin in aged animals and elderly cohorts for effects on immune indices and, in long-term studies, on mortality, making it a reference compound in immunosenescence research.

Cytokine and inflammatory signalling

Thymic peptides are studied for their reported modulation of interleukin and interferon production by immune cells in vitro.

Comparison with defined thymic peptides

Thymalin is often studied alongside single-sequence thymic peptides such as thymosin alpha-1 and the synthetic dipeptide Vilon (Lys-Glu), which was derived from it, to identify the active components of the complex.

Haematopoiesis and stress models

Animal models of immune suppression, radiation exposure and chronic stress use Thymalin to examine recovery of lymphoid tissue and blood-cell parameters.

Mechanism of action (preclinical)

The short peptides in Thymalin are proposed to act in the same way as other Khavinson bioregulators: entering cells and interacting with DNA and chromatin to modulate transcription of genes that govern differentiation and proliferation. In lymphoid tissue this is reported to promote maturation of T-cell precursors and restore the balance of T-cell subsets in models of immune deficiency.

Thymalin is also reported to influence expression of signalling molecules in immune cells and to normalise neuroendocrine-immune interactions in aged animals. Because the preparation is a peptide complex rather than a single molecule, mechanistic work often uses its synthetic derivatives, such as Vilon, to isolate individual activities.

Available sizes

Thymalin is available from GenoPept in the following vial sizes:

  • Thymalin 10mg vial

Laboratories that need larger quantities can order Thymalin in bulk boxes of 10 vials, which save 20–50% against single-vial pricing. Retail baskets also receive automatic discounts at £300, £500 and £1,000, and delivery is free on UK orders of £200 or more.

Reconstitution, handling and storage (laboratory)

Unopened Thymalin vials should be stored at −20 °C for long-term storage, or at 2–8 °C for short periods, and protected from light. Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening to avoid condensation on the lyophilised cake.

To reconstitute for in-vitro work, add bacteriostatic water or another sterile diluent slowly down the inside wall of the vial, then swirl gently until the powder dissolves. Do not shake. Thymalin is a mixture of short, water-soluble polypeptides and dissolves readily in sterile diluent. Reconstituted solution should be kept at 2–8 °C and used within the period specified in the laboratory’s own protocol. See our guides on how to reconstitute research peptides and how to store research peptides for step-by-step handling notes.

Quality assurance and Certificate of Analysis

Every batch of Thymalin sold by GenoPept is tested by an independent third-party laboratory (Puralytix, ISO/IEC 17025 accredited) using HPLC for purity and LC-MS for identity confirmation. Results are published in a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA), and each vial is labelled with its lot number and expiry date so the paperwork can be matched to the product on the bench.

Use the “View Certificate of Analysis” button on this page to open the current Thymalin COA, or browse the full COA library. Our article on what a Certificate of Analysis shows explains how to read the chromatogram and mass spectrum.

Thymalin 10mg frequently asked questions

What is Thymalin used for in research?

Thymalin is used in immunology and gerontology research as a thymic peptide bioregulator. Laboratories study it in cell-culture and animal models of T-cell differentiation, immunosenescence, cytokine signalling and recovery from immune suppression, and as a reference complex when characterising single-sequence thymic peptides. It is supplied in the UK strictly for in-vitro laboratory research.

How is Thymalin supplied and what purity is it?

GenoPept supplies Thymalin as a lyophilised powder in a sealed sterile glass 10mg vial. Each batch is tested at ≥99% purity by HPLC with identity confirmed by LC-MS at an independent ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory, and the batch-specific Certificate of Analysis can be opened from the button on this page or in the UK COA library.

How should Thymalin be stored?

Store unopened Thymalin vials at −20 °C for long-term storage, or at 2–8 °C for short periods, protected from light. After reconstitution with bacteriostatic water or sterile diluent, keep the solution at 2–8 °C and use it within the period defined by your laboratory protocol, avoiding repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

Is Thymalin for human use?

No. Thymalin sold here is for in-vitro laboratory research only. It is not a medicine in the UK and is not for human or veterinary use, diagnosis or therapy. Although thymic peptide preparations appear in older clinical literature from other countries, this research-grade product is not licensed and this page gives no dosing or usage guidance for people.

What is the difference between Thymalin and thymosin alpha-1?

Thymalin is a standardised complex of many short thymic polypeptides and is defined by its peptide profile rather than one sequence. Thymosin alpha-1 is a single, fully characterised 28-amino-acid peptide (CAS 62304-98-7) that can be synthesised to a precise molecular weight. Researchers use Thymalin to study the thymic complex as a whole and thymosin alpha-1 when a defined molecule is required.

Research use only. Thymalin is supplied by GenoPept strictly for in-vitro laboratory research. It is not a medicine, is not for human or veterinary use, and is not intended for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Read our research use only policy and UK legal guide before ordering.
